Lo stile Luigi XVI naque in Francia negli ultimi decenni del Settecento, e si diffuse rapidamente conquistando il pubblico di tutta l'Europa. Si caratterizzava per le linee classiche ed eleganti, in contrasto con l'asimmetria e l'abbondanza di elementi decorativi tipiche del Rococò e del Luigi XV, stili che definirono l'epoca precedente.
Elemento chiave dello stile Luigi XVI è il rinnovato interesse per i temi della cultura classica greca e romana, che porta a prediligere forme lineari, compostezza geometrica, decorazioni simmetriche ed evocative dell'antichità. Ghirlande, foglie d'alloro, greche, motivi floreali, intarsi a sfondo mitologico, colonne e capitelli si uniscono a materiali preziosi quali essenze lignee, bronzo dorato e marmo, in una sintesi formale che rispecchiava il nuovo gusto dell'epoca, e prese il nome di Luigi XVI. Ancora oggi gli arredi in stile sono sinonimo di eleganza e prestigio.

The Louis XVI style originated in France in the last decades of the eighteenth century, and quickly spread to conquer audiences throughout Europe. It was characterized by classical and elegant lines, in contrast to the asymmetry and abundance of decorative elements typical of the Rococo and Louis XV, styles that defined the previous era.
A key element of the Louis XVI style is the renewed interest in the themes of classical Greek and Roman culture, leading to a preference for linear forms, geometric composure, and symmetrical decorations evocative of antiquity. Garlands, laurel leaves, friezes, floral motifs, inlays with mythological backgrounds, columns, and capitals were combined with precious materials such as wood essences, gilded bronze, and marble, in a formal synthesis that reflected the new taste of the time, and took the name Louis XVI. Even today, furniture in the style is synonymous with elegance and prestige.
