Questo raffinato olio su tela è un ritratto ufficiale firmato e datato “Martin 1821” in basso a sinistra, opera realizzata con grande cura nei dettagli e nella resa espressiva del soggetto. Il personaggio rappresentato è un uomo maturo, probabilmente un ufficiale di alto rango dell’esercito francese, immortalato con uno sguardo penetrante ma sereno, che tradisce una vita di esperienza e disciplina.

Indossa una sontuosa uniforme militare nera con collo e paramani rossi, bottoni dorati e spalline con frange dorate. Sul petto sono visibili due prestigiose onorificenze:

La Croce della Legione d’Onore, la più alta decorazione francese.

Un’altra medaglia, probabilmente sempre legata a meriti militari.

Lo sfondo è scuro e neutro, come da tradizione nei ritratti di inizio Ottocento, e contribuisce a mettere in risalto la figura del soggetto. La cornice coeva, in legno dorato con ricche applicazioni ornamentali floreali agli angoli e lungo i bordi, aggiunge ulteriore importanza al dipinto.
